L.A. beatmaker Sahy Uhns just released his debut album, An Intolerant Disdain Of Underlings, on Proximal Records. Mixing beats, found sounds and lots of delicious space blap, the album reminds us of the musical possibilities that occur when a producer allows their creativity to wander. Uhns sculpted what he’s dubbed the Ecru Haze Mix exclusively for us. Instead of sonically stitching together his new tracks (okay, there are two of his songs on this mix) with some big hits, he decided to present us with something much more personal. “All of the tracks in this mix came from my personal vinyl collection with the exception of the two tracks of mine,” he tells us. And our ears are all the better for it. Download and enjoy.

“Santa Monica producers Daedelus and Sahy Uhns sit down to discuss the fine art of creating beautiful compositions and nerding out on custom gear. In 2011, Daedelus has toured his mind blowing new live show, ARCHIMEDES, in support of his release, Bespoke, on Ninja Tune this year. Sahy Uhns dropped a stunning new album on Proximal Records October 18th complete with a 5″x5″ hardcover photo book .

Daedelus: To begin. Charlie, I’d consider you to have a distinct voice, that is to say your LP is full of perspective – the kind typically hard fought for after a long time, but you are comparably young. How would you explain this if you’d believe me?”

“Calibrating ears to phenomena of everyday noise, the remixed version of the track, while intricate and contemplative, isn’t as danceable as the original. Smooth boom-bap passages are replaced with looped and choppy drums and ambient synth flourishes that turn “Montebello” into a beat meant to be absorbed with eyes closed.”

The video was shot by Sahy Uhns using an iPhone and Sony Digital8 Handycam. He then transferred much of the footage to VHS tape and digitized it. The video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.

Sahy Uhns’ Explanation:

“The video imagines a future memory of a mother and interprets how that day was perceived through the eyes of her child. It begins in the early morning, a time of peace preceding the chaos of the rest of the mother’s day. Throughout the video, the point of view switches between first-person accounts of the memory from the perspective of the mother and the child and my own reflection on their relationship. The middle section of the video attempts to depict the kind of over-saturation of information and concepts that a child is flooded with and how it must feel to make sense of them. An inundation of images that super-impose and intersect, revealing their similarities and differences, becomes a visualization of the child’s analytical process. The closing segment of the video takes us back to the perspective of the mother, watching her child until his image is the last thing she sees as she fades into sleep.”

Underground SoCal producer Carl Madison Burgin (a.k.a. Sahy Uhns, which, by the way, is pronounced science) draws from hip-hop and electronic to formulate his heady, always challenging soundscape. On October 18th Burgin will unveil his debut album, An Intolerant Disdain Of Underlings, on Proximal Records, both as an online digital LP and as a 5″x5″ hardcover photo book with the CD tray in the back cover. We caught up with this L.A. native and asked him to wax poetic about his five sources for sampling in L.A. Be sure to watch Burgin in the video below, bringing his live boom-bap live and direct.

1. The Metrolink station in Van Nuys. I was there waiting for a friend to get in from Santa Barbara and recorded the sounds of the trains pulling in and passing. I didn’t have my field recorder yet so I recorded it on an old broken cassette recorder. Those recordings were sampled for the beginning of “Randsburg.”
