Wake Releases 2nd EP: The Fifth Finger OUT NOW

Immediately following the release of his debut EP on Proximal, Oakland Blackouts, Wake has released his second EP, The Fifth Finger on August 21, 2012 showcasing a different creative side. The Fifth Finger will be Wake’s take on gangsta beats – read more on the EP in his words below.

“The Fifth Finger is a collection of songs started years ago, and finished recently. This EP is an attempt to balance square wave funk-hop with songwriting and alternative production techniques. They’re my try at “gangster” beats, created with the intention of “not giving a fuck.” The tracks on The Fifth Finger are a marriage of early 2000s glitch-hop, 80s dance music, music from the underground MOD community, and odd-ball electro-pop. Made from samples of analog gear and sequenced in MOD trackers, they are purely electronic tunes– sequenced, mixed, and edited “in the box.” They hope to be off kilter, goofy, glitchy, hard beats with a punk intention. Wake – Oakland Blackouts OUT NOW

“Oakland Blackouts started as a sort of afterthought. For a while, I had been interested in making a set of organic sounding electronic music that, while created using electronics, existed in an implied physical space. Most of the work that went into this EP focused on textural density, stereo and space manipulation, and subtle tuning of intensity through tempo and volume automation– which was a departure from my normal working process– a more hyper-edit based sequence programing composition workflow. Unlike my other work, Oakland Blackouts was recorded in takes and played mostly live. Samples were mapped to MIDI controllers, and effects and automation were played in on faders. The synthesizers were largely (edited) live recordings made with hardware, including an analog modular synthesizer and a Yamaha FM synth from the ‘80s. The process behind this EP allowed freedom for improvisatory compositional thought, and thus, (like a blackout) I barely remember making it.” – Wake

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Debut EP Out Now!

Consisting of west coast transplant lyricist NOTE and Danish producer Simon Muschinsky, the technical genius of the successful Danish pop ensemble When Saints Go Machine (!K7, EMI Scandinavia) The League’s mind-bending mix of hip-hop and electronic music can only be described using their own words; “Gangsta Electro Clash”. The debut release of Superconductor will surely push the boundaries of both genres and prove that an amalgamation of kindrid spirits cannot be hindered, no matter how varied the backgrounds or great the physical distance.

We are proud to announce Beat Stew Vol. 4! The fifth installment of the Beat Stew series takes the listener on a trip through a range of styles from hip-hop to ambient, all woven together by label head, Sahy Uhns. Featuring 10 new tracks from the Proximal crew, they are joined by some familiar names from the past along with new contributions from the likes of recent Red Bull Music Academy grad Claude Speeed (American Men, LuckyMe), Italy’s AD Bourke (Citinite, Scenario, Basic Rhythm), and Beat Scene veteran Co.fee (My Hollow Drum, Label Who, HW&W Recordings). He is joined by a stellar cast of remixers including French touch extraordinaire Fred Falke, Brodinski, Skream, and more!

We are honored to announce that Proximal has been nominated for two Independent Music Awards. Our debut compilation Proximity One: Narrative of a City has been nominated for best compilation while Sahy Uhns‘ debut LP An Intolerant Disdain Of Underlings is up for best Electronica/Dance album, which was won last year by Flying Lotus‘ Cosmogramma.

The winners will be determined by a panel of 77 artist and industry judges including the great Keith Richards and Tom Waits!

In support of his debut LP An Intolerant Disdain Of Underlings Sahy Uhns provides a rare “DJ” mix consisting of tracks from his personal vinyl collection.

L.A. beatmaker Sahy Uhns just released his debut album, An Intolerant Disdain Of Underlings, on Proximal Records. Mixing beats, found sounds and lots of delicious space blap, the album reminds us of the musical possibilities that occur when a producer allows their creativity to wander. Uhns sculpted what he’s dubbed the Ecru Haze Mix exclusively for us. Instead of sonically stitching together his new tracks (okay, there are two of his songs on this mix) with some big hits, he decided to present us with something much more personal. “All of the tracks in this mix came from my personal vinyl collection with the exception of the two tracks of mine,” he tells us. And our ears are all the better for it. Download and enjoy.

“Santa Monica producers Daedelus and Sahy Uhns sit down to discuss the fine art of creating beautiful compositions and nerding out on custom gear. In 2011, Daedelus has toured his mind blowing new live show, ARCHIMEDES, in support of his release, Bespoke, on Ninja Tune this year. Sahy Uhns dropped a stunning new album on Proximal Records October 18th complete with a 5″x5″ hardcover photo book .

Daedelus: To begin. Charlie, I’d consider you to have a distinct voice, that is to say your LP is full of perspective – the kind typically hard fought for after a long time, but you are comparably young. How would you explain this if you’d believe me?”
